Accelerating the Oil and Gas Energy Transition Through Carbon Capture Utilization Technology

The Chemical Vocational Board of the Indonesian Engineers Association (BKKPII – Badan Kejuruan Kimia Persatuan Insinyur Indonesia) held its second Focus Group Discussion (FGD) as part of the BKKPII 2025 Annual Meeting in Jakarta on May 2. The event carried the theme “Implementation of CCU/CCS/CCUS Technology for a Sustainable Oil and Gas Industry in Indonesia.”

One of the key innovations highlighted was the CCU technology from PT Algatek Karbon Nusantara, which converts industrial CO₂ into biomass of economic value, supporting a circular carbon economy. This was presented by our commissioner, Ria Kusuma Dewi.

The FGD aimed to formulate strategic recommendations to strengthen policies and accelerate the adoption of CCU/CCS/CCUS technologies, while also fostering a collaborative ecosystem to support Indonesia’s national energy transition.

Rehabilitating Former Mining Ponds

Efforts to rehabilitate former tin mine ponds are seen as a solution to restore land productivity and provide economic benefits to local communities. In many cases, abandoned mining pits have turned into stagnant ponds, causing environmental degradation.

This year, initiatives to manage former mining land were launched through the Ikanesia Nusantara Akuamarin and Berikan Protein Initiative, in collaboration with the GoTo Impact Foundation, the non-profit arm of the GoTo Group. On Bitung Island, one such “kulong” (former mining pond) has been transformed into a freshwater fish cultivation site. The restoration project is located in Air Seruk Village, Sijuk District, Belitung Regency.

As part of the consortium, Algatek supports Ikanesia Nusantara Akuamarin and Berikanesia Lestari in promoting environmental sustainability through microalgae technology, helping to preserve ex-tin mine kulong ponds and convert them into productive fish farming sites.
