Algatek Develops Microalgae-Based CCU Directly from Power Plant Flue Gas

Algatek Karbon Nusantara and PLN Nusantara Power have joined forces to develop a microalgae-based Carbon Capture and Utilization (CCU) system at PLTGU Block 3 Muara Karang, Jakarta. The initiative is part of a joint research project exploring the potential of microalgae as a carbon capture and utilization solution for large-scale power generation facilities.

In operation since March 2026, a 3,000-liter photobioreactor (PBR) was installed at UP Muara Karang Block 3 to absorb CO₂ emissions from the plant’s flue gas — which carries a concentration of 4–6% CO₂ — through microalgae photosynthesis. The entire process is monitored in real-time via an IoT system equipped with CO₂ sensors at both the gas input and output lines, enabling accurate and verifiable measurement of carbon absorption. Pilot testing results showed the system exceeded its minimum efficiency target of 30%, achieving over 80%. Beyond carbon capture, the system also produces algal biomass that can be utilized as organic fertilizer or aquaculture feed.

On April 18, 2026, a technical briefing and site visit were held at the installation site. The event was attended by National Energy Council (DEN) member Dr. Ir. Sripeni Inten Cahyani and senior management from PT PLN (Persero). The Algatek team presented the project’s progress on-site, followed by a direct visit to the photobioreactor area to observe the system in operation. The forum also served as a platform for discussing advanced technical aspects, the potential for carbon credits from verified CO₂ absorption, and future biomassa supply chain development.

The successful implementation at Muara Karang is expected to serve as a foundation for replicating microalgae-based CCU technology across other power generation units. This achievement demonstrates that collaboration between PLN and a domestic energy startup can deliver concrete, high-impact decarbonization solutions in support of Indonesia’s energy transition..
