Algatek Successfully Implements Indonesia’s Largest Microalgae-Based Carbon Capture Technology at Pertamina’s Upstream Oil & Gas Facility

Subang, Indonesia — PT Algatek Karbon Nusantara has successfully implemented its microalgae-based Carbon Capture and Utilization (CCU) technology at the Stasiun Pengumpul (SP) Subang, Pertamina EP Regional 2 Zona 7 Subang Area.

The installation was carried out as part of the implementation of Algatek’s carbon capture technology by PT Patra Drilling Contractor (PDC) and the Upstream Innovation Function of PT Pertamina Hulu Energi (PHE) to support CO₂ emission reduction in upstream oil and gas operations.

The project marks an important milestone in the application of microalgae-based carbon capture technology within Indonesia’s energy sector. By utilizing living microalgae as a biological carbon sink, the system captures high-concentration carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions through photosynthesis, converting them into oxygen and microalgae biomass while supporting more sustainable upstream operations.

Designed for industrial operating conditions, the system processes CO₂ concentrations ranging from 96–98% and utilizes 10,000 liters of microalgae culture. The installation was engineered with a targeted CO₂ absorption capacity of 0.05–0.20 MMSCFD and successfully demonstrated a maximum CO₂ absorption capacity of 0.11 MMSCFD, validating the performance of Algatek’s biological Carbon Capture and Utilization (CCU) technology under high-concentration CO₂ conditions.

Beyond reducing carbon emissions, the implementation also demonstrates the added value of biological carbon capture. During the process, the cultivated microalgae generate biomass that can be further utilized for downstream applications. As the next stage of the initiative, the resulting biomass is being developed by Pertamina into a derivative product known as ELAM, reflecting how captured carbon can be transformed into resources with added economic value as part of a circular carbon utilization approach.

The successful deployment of Algatek’s technology at SP Subang demonstrates the growing adoption of microalgae-based Carbon Capture and Utilization (CCU) solutions within Indonesia’s upstream oil and gas industry. It also highlights the potential of biological carbon capture as a practical, scalable, and measurable solution for supporting industrial decarbonization, greenhouse gas emission reduction, and long-term sustainability objectives.

As industries continue to pursue effective carbon management strategies, Algatek remains committed to advancing microalgae carbon capture technology through continuous innovation and real-world implementation. The successful installation at Pertamina’s upstream facility reinforces Algatek’s position as a technology provider delivering nature-based carbon capture solutions for Indonesia’s transition toward a low-carbon future.
